The Amazon Esplanade

Here, a woman doesn't stand guard over the past — she watches over the future.

About The Amazon Esplanade

The Amazon Esplanade

On the Marina boulevard, facing the ocean, a bronze woman nearly thirty metres tall stands with her weapon raised. You see her before you even understand what you’re seeing. All around, the Esplanade was designed to make you stop: landscaped walkways, urban furniture, and vast open spaces for ceremonies, evening strolls and large gatherings. After nightfall, the lighting reveals a different monument than the one seen by day.

The Agojié: Warrior Women of the Kingdom of Danxomè

The Esplanade honours the Agojié, the women warriors of the kingdom of Danxomè who, from the 17th to the 19th century, formed an elite military corps recognised for its courage, discipline and role in defending the kingdom. Through this monument, Benin does more than commemorate: it affirms women’s place in its history, an exceptional legacy, a national memory built on courage, resilience and sovereignty. Inaugurated in 2022, the Esplanade quickly became one of the country’s iconic monuments.

The visit

The experience

Come twice. By day, to take in the scale, walk around the base, and let the cultural guides tell you who the Agojié really were — well beyond what cinema has retained. Then by evening, when the light sculpts the bronze and the Marina fills up: families out for a stroll, walkers, young people settled facing the sea. You then understand that the Esplanade isn't a monument you visit, but a place Cotonou lives in. And if your stay coincides with a commemoration or one of the major events held here, you'll see it play its true role: that of a square where the country comes together.
