The Black River
The Black River winds through dense vegetation, in the communes of Adjarra and Avrankou among others. Raffia palms, bamboo, preserved gallery forest: the landscape closes gently over the water. Despite its name, its waters are clear. The impression of dark colour comes from the riverbed and the thickness of the plant cover, which casts a permanent shadow over the waterway and gives the site its mysterious yet soothing atmosphere.
For generations, the Black River has held an important place in the life of riverside communities: a fishing ground, a travel route, a place for passing on knowledge tied to nature. Local accounts also give it a spiritual dimension, making this landscape a place where natural heritage, traditions and beliefs meet. It’s now recognised as an ecotourism site that showcases both the biodiversity and the cultural heritage of the Ouémé valley.

The experience
Climb into a canoe and let the boatman carry you along the water. There's nothing to do here, and that's exactly the point. The water stays quiet, the birds announce themselves before they show. Along the way, the guide tells you what the river means to the people who live on its banks, in a story that unfolds at the water's pace, between two silences.
Before reaching the jetty, a stop lets you discover local specialities, notably grilled pork. Then, in a riverside village, step into local daily life: a look at the distillery, basket-weaving, palm oil production when the season allows, the various deities and the practices that shape the rhythm of village life. The river has slowed you down; the village brings you back to conversation.

Departure by traditional canoe from the Anagodomey jetty, arriving at the Vagnon landing. Available year-round. Life jackets strongly recommended for the entire crossing. Morning recommended for birdwatching. Bring: a hat, sun protection, light long-sleeved clothing for late afternoon, and insect repellent.
