For several centuries, Abomey was the political, cultural and spiritual center of the Kingdom of Danxomè, one of West Africa’s most powerful kingdoms. Its rulers, palaces and famous Amazons shaped a history that continues to resonate far beyond Benin’s borders today.

The city preserves exceptional heritage, carried in particular by the Royal Palaces of Abomey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Historical monuments, living traditions and ancestral know-how tell the story of a kingdom that profoundly shaped the country’s identity.
